We came into Hitchcock Deli on July 5th at around 3pm. It was clear that they were overwhelmed - the line stretched into the back bakery area. It took 45 minutes to actually get through the line to order. Once we did, they were out of regular bread. That's OK, but their substitute, which they said was ciabatta, actually wasn't. They actually used a large, hard baguette as a substitute. The sandwich itself was piled so high with ingredients that you couldn't close the baguette. So we attempted to eat it open-face-sandwich style. Disaster. The ingredients didn't have any flavor either. There was nothing on the sandwich as far as condiments - no mustard, no mayo, etc. I ate a couple bites of my sandwich - mostly bites of bread - and then gave up. I was with four other friends, and their selections were equally mediocre. I don't get the hype about this place. I hear their restaurant next door is good. We should have gone there instead.

The sandwiches here are fantastic. I've had the meatloaf sandwich, which was incredible. The woman working the counter recommended adding bread and butter pickles to the sandwich. Oh my gosh...so good. I've also had the pastrami/reuben. The sauerkraut is homemade and pretty good, I would have liked it to have a little more zip. The pastrami itself...probably some of the best pastrami I have had in...I don't even know how long. Truly remarkable flavor. The potato salad is good. They serve espresso & beer and wine. Great, great place.

Good sandwiches, but not great. The pastrami was the best of what we ordered. Unless it's Summer and you can eat outside, there's really no seating. You'd do better to get them to-go.

My wife and I decided to ride the ferry over to Bainbridge Island to kick around and have some fun. We became hungry, and stopped here for lunch. What a pleasant surprise! BEST! PASTRAMI! EVER!!! The meat melts in your mouth. SO! GOOD! We will definitely be taking the ferry out here for lunch just to have this excellent pastrami sandwich! Great stuff, guys. Thanks!

Paaaaaaassstraaaami. Get some. Everything is made in house, sourced locally and so delicious. They've even got a sweet bright red espresso machine and made fudge and macaroons to polish it off. Portion size is perfect, hearty but not over the top that leaves you with a busted gut or wasted food guilt. The atmostphere is quaint, friendly, unambitious but inviting. Did I mention pastrami? And the complaint about it being messy is ridiculous. The five or so crumbles that fell onto my plate just added to the decadence. Counter service was very friendly and engaging. I am totally in love with this deli and its neighborhood.

The service was ridiculously slow. Not very busy, but cramped for waiting room. The whole experience was an unorganized mess. After over an hour wait, the stupid sandwich was pretty good ... So here's one star. Biggest gripe: Even after complaining about the wait the girl couldn't even squeeze an 'I'm sorry'. I guess the Manager didn't train her any better than her mama.

Cuban b. is my favorite. They certainly know their meats. Never tried the sausage, but I'm looking forward to it.

The bacon....dear Lord, the bacon! I dream about their BLT. They pile it in with their own cured and smoked bacon. We bought a pound of bacon and cooked it up for our weekend breakfasts. I'm nibbling on some as I type this. My husband got the pastrami and gave me a bite. That was all I was afforded because he didn't want to share. If you're visiting Bainbridge and need a place to eat, go here! You won't go wrong with any of the sandwiches, salads and soups, and desserts.

  • Robert K.

I can only echo previous reviews. This is one of the most poorly run businesses I have ever encountered. No system of ordering, you pay in advance because otherwise you would not tolerate the exceedingly long wait for your order. I waited over 45 min for three sandwiches!! The food was expensive for what you received. The BLT was OK but the other tow sandwiches were a strange mixture of tastes. Stay away. It ruined a beautiful day.

We ordered ~12 lbs of deli meats here for our rehearsal dinner before our wedding. The staff were great at taking a special order and giving us realistic times to expect food to be ready (e.g. the ham was smoking all day and not ready til a little later - it was AMAZING, btw). We had sandwiches here 3-4 times during previous visits to the island and I think everything we tried was delicious. They are a little expensive against their competitors, and they could do with a bit more seating inside. We've only been in during slow times, but I see other reviews noting that it's too cramped to set up a good ordering system - I could see how that could be the case. A few more staffers and more space would go a long way to knocking them to the front of the line for Bainbridge lunch places.

Real turkey! My sandwich had it, carved right off the bird. This place was a really interesting find; they do all of their own meats and that really is the focus, and the sandwiches are hearty and simple and fresh. Four stars only because it's pretty grab-and-go - just one table inside, and a slab table outside - but that's also what makes it so interesting; it's a charcuterie first and a deli second. Would definitely recommend/return.

  • Debbie C.

It gets a 4 (should be 3 1/2) because of the pastrami. It was wonderfully smoky and flavorful though it's chopped up consistency made eating the sandwich difficult. it was much messier than it needed to be. The roast beef sandwich on the other hand was just plain bland with overcooked meat and no flavoring at all. The bit of carmelized onions helped but it was a major let down. The homemade pickles are a definate 5. As good as my mothers which I haven't had in years since she's passed away.

  • Maureen S.

    Loved their Potato Leek soup!

    (4)
  • Manda B.

The sandwiches are tasty, the staff is friendly and they let me eat at the table outside with my dog at my side. I can't really ask for much more.

  • Bri F.

Loved the smell and locally-sourced aspectsof Hitchcock. Turkey sandwich didn't have a ton of flavor, but the BACON. Add it, you won't regret it.

  • isabelle l.

Walked in we were the only customers. Three count them three people working and not one acknowledged us for some time, Then eventually one said we will be right with you. Oh so we have to wait more time while you put some I believe coleslaw or whatever in a large container. Really? We left.

Just have to add my $.02 about this fabulous addition to Bainbridge Island. First and foremost, it is a fabulous deli & charcuterie that is getting better all the time. They sell their own smoked and aged meats (their bacon is fabulous), plus local clams and oysters, incredible cheeses, eggs, and much more. And don't even get me started on their sandwiches. The BLT is made with their own bacon, which is allowed to star. The turkey features their own roasted turkey breast, shaved thin and piled high. Also enjoyed the pulled pork. And did I mention they also make killer espresso drinks that go fabulously with their house-made macarons?

    (5)
  • Daniel B.

Delicious place! We had the pulled pork and the pastrami Ruben. The pork was OK, but the Ruben was probably one of the best Ruben's I've ever had! A bit on the pricey side as you're going to pay ~$9-11 for a sandwich after taxes. And it comes with nothing on the side. But its top notch for a gourmet sandwich. Not much of an eating area though. A couple small tables. I think it's designed to be a take and go kind of place.

    (4)
  • Drew J.

We were just visiting for the afternoon and grabbed sandwiches from Hitchcock to eat by the water. Had the turkey and pork sandwiches. They were delicious.

  • Benjamin D.

I'll tell you, honestly, why this is getting a five-star review. Yes, the service is friendly and competent. Yes, the sandwiches are delicious and well-priced. Yes, my wife found the best mocha on the island and maybe in Seattle on the whole. But, what tops it off for me is what the Hitchcock Delicatessen & Charcuterie stand for in our world of packaged and processed foods. If I've learned one thing from a bit of world travel it's that we are about as disconnected from our food, in the US, as we possibly could be. But, it hasn't always been this way. Our small towns and cities alike once boasted (likely in every neighborhood) these little meat shops that make us fall in love with Europe. Well, Brendan McGill is bringing back, in full-swing, and with style! It's an experience (one that our grandparents probably remember) to walk into a shop where at the front espresso is being hand-pulled, while a sandwich is being built in the mid-ground, and in the back of the shop, beyond the cases full of ridiculously tasty charcuterie, in full-view, meat is being cured, worked and shaped into the yumminess that will find it's way into said case! So, what gets the five star rating? A good, honest fight for good, honest foods made with real ingredients, sourced from real farmers; and presented in a tradition that is timeless. Hitchcock has found the cure (pun fully intended)!

  • Phil L.

This rating is based mostly on quality of food. The servers were polite, attentive and quick on delivery. I ordered the pastrami (10$). It was awesome. The quantity of meat was just right. Kraut was crunchy and sweet. The cabbage was purple and cut into larger-than-standard slices. The dressing didn't standout against the competing tastes of bread/pastrami/kraut, but it did support the trio. Rye did not overwhelm the other tastes and bread was a good consistency. I would give 5 stars but I have only been here once. After a few more 5-star sandwiches ill bump the rating. I will be making another ferry trip from Seattle to try another sandwich.

  • Kim M.

This place is great, especially considering the relatively few places to eat on the island (we just moved here from Seattle). The meats in the case looked delicious, and meatball sub was very good. Can't wait to try the pastrami and roasted turkey. This will definitely be the new standby for us.

  • Malcolm A.

Wonderful food and very charming space. The pastrami sandwich was smoky and luscious. Definitely the best I've had in the Pacific Northwest.

    (5)
  • Pat J.

Amazing food...in a most unsuspected location!! We had the Carolina BBQ sandwich and the Pastrami (piled high!) sandwich. Both exceeded our expectations. Will definitely return. If it's before lunch, we will overindulge in their coffee and breakfast selections!!

    (5)
  • Neil W.

This was our fall back lunch when one place was too crowded, but looking back I am so glad we came. I ordered the Club with house made bacon. The bacon is amazing. It has a great balance of smoke and salt. It did not take over the sandwich; it was just a great accent. My wife got the BLT and added egg salad. It was a good choice too. We also had the beet salad. I watched the food coming out and nothing going back. These are well crafted.

ATMOSPHERE: Tiny little coffee shop with indoor & outdoor seating, the latter being great for people-watching along quaint but busy Winslow Way. BEVERAGE: Cafe mocha - Hot, creamy & delicious. That sounds wrong in all the right ways. SERVICE: A bit slow but we're not in Starbucks anymore Toto!

Stopped by Hitchcock for Sunday brunch before road trippin to Port Townsend. My faves were the pastrami and white bean chili. I wonder if I could request the bread to be toasted, the pastrami was delicate and not salty. Just right for me.

This is obviously one of the busiest sandwich shop in downtown Bainbridge. We came for lunch with a group of friends to grab a quick lunch as we were in the area for a wedding event and the yelp reviews were very convincing. I ordered the cuban while hubby got the chi-town roast beef. My cuban took a while to prepare..everyone in our group almost finished their sandwiches when we finally got ours. The porchetta inside the cuban was a bit on the oily side and just so you porchetta is made with pork belly, so if you don't care of fatty cut of meat, don't order the sandwich with porchetta. I don't mind fatty meat but I was wishing that the porchetta would have been roasted so that it was more brown. The ham in the cuban made the sandwich a bit too salty for my taste. I had a few bites of hubby's chi-town roast beef and boy, it was delicious and I would recommend this!!! You can paid a little extra and got potato salad instead of chips... potato salad was yummy and light, not heavily seasoned (not a lot of mayo either), chips are fresh and crisp... Overall.... this place sells expensive sandwiches.. sandwiches are $10+ each! and while they were generous with the meat, it wasn't a huge sandwich. Soup was delicious (had a little sip of my friend's) too bad they ran out and we had to wait at least 20 minutes for the next batch to cook so we didn't order it. Overall, not a bad place but also not too special...

  • Dirck S.

I LOVE the food here, but it takes 20 f-ing minutes to get bacon in an empty store! I wonder if it is because I didn't tip. Again, I just bought BACON. Not a sandwich, not a coffee, just plain bacon. I don't think should have to tip when buying bacon at a deli. So here's how it went down: I ordered and paid for my bacon, I sat down to wait for it, and I was there for literally 20 minutes, and I was the only person in the deli. Eventually I wondered what was going on and I looked up, and I saw a parcel at the far end of the counter. I got the attention of the gal who was working the register, and I asked what was taking so long with my bacon, and without a word she turned around and grabbed the bacon that had been packaged up at the end of the counter walked over handed it to me and that was it. No "sorry it took so long" no "I didn't see you sitting there." Nothing. Just, "here's your bacon and get the hell out" attitude. The ONLY guy there who cares at all about customer service is Kale. Pity, this place could be great, but 50% of the time I go there I leave pissed off. That's the truth.

Um......bruh. This place is the real deal. Nice to be able to come to Yelp and give props to the the businesses doing it right. I had a simple roast beef sandwich and it was incredible; super juicy and cooked well with great great bread. The counter staff was super friendly and the owner ( Brendan McGill ) and his wife pop out right in the middle and come start talking to us at the table. Dude is nuts (in a good way) about food, but specifically about where they get their ingredients from. Really nice chat. Will def be back when we roll through. Cheers!

I can only give stars for what I ordered... If I hadn't made the mistake of paying $14 for a corned beef sandwich I might possibly be happier and a lot fuller. Don't get me wrong Hitchcock has a great rep for their charcuterie and smoked bacon... I just made 2 strikes by ordering the wrong sandwich and ordering Togo. Which doesn't come with chips, um what?! Your charging me for less then 1 lb of meat a few pickles and 1 a slice of cheese. And I get no chips? So anyway... Lesson learned is as follows order the BLT for $8 for a $1 more add egg salad and be a happier camper enjoy the ambience if there is seating and get chips. Or just get charcuterie that's probably more bang for your buck. Overall flavor of the sandwich was pretty good the whole grain mustard straight up had a bunch of mustard seeds which always gives a nice kick. The corned beef was tender and juicy nicely seasoned. The pickles were thin slices and weren't to bad either. As a full bite the sandwich was just okay. I do see the quality that Hitchcock offers I just wish there was more value to go with the quality that is served. Just don't let my review detour you away form the place in that it really is a great place just don't order the corned beef unless your dying to try it.

Sandwiches are good, we had the club and the bang mi (a small kale salad for $6 was extra tiny, about a cup in terms of measuring cup, see attached pictures...not worth it, don't get it)

  • Joy C.

Perfect for pastry w/coffee and for lunch, or take away beautiful charcuterie for picnic. High quality ingredients, locally sourced, made in-house. The baristas are the most skilled on the island. Excellent espresso perfectly pulled. Delectable. LOVE this place!

I wish there two ratings available--one for the food, and another for the service. The sandwiches are four stars, I get them frequently. The service generally sucks. Today was another frustrating customer experience. I was stoked to redeem my punch card for a free sandwich. I called ahead to put in my order so I wouldn't have to wait, and asked if I got the pastrami, whether the punch card included the "piled high" option. The answer was yes, so I ordered it piled high. I showed up to present my card, and the cashier asked what seemed to be the manager whether the piled high option was included with the punch card freebie... and the answer was no. When I pointed out that I had called to specifically ask about this, and that the answer was different, this manager asked me "well who did you talk to?" I didn't know who I talked to, and I don't really care. My issue isn't with the fact that I probably got the wrong answer on the phone. My issue is that I talked to someone about this very issue already today, and that the manager couldn't care less and straight walked away from the . I was embarrassed to feel like I was haggling over 2 or 3 bucks with people in line.

This place has some excellent sandwiches and some pretty good sandwiches, and I'm pretty sure that's all they offer. Good and perfect. The ambiance inside is really cool; half a charcuterie and half a sandwich/coffee place. If I hadn't been so hyped up on coffee already, I would have certainly tried a caffe latte with raw milk here (what even is that, sounds delicious though). My only complaint is that there are only 6 total indoor seats; it's itty-bitty. Onto their sandwiches! I ordered a Club ($12) and my bf ordered the BLT with egg salad ($9?). The club was good, but the BLT was PERFECT. The meat on the club was amazing (and I'm not even a ham-person!), and the bacon is definitely something special. Unfortunately, the sandwich was kind of dry and I had hoped it would be warmer. Nevertheless, it was very tasty. The BLT on the other hand was perfectly moist, had the best bacon ever, and the bread the use for the BLT is the most amazing sandwich bread I've ever had. I would maybe even cut out the egg salad (the default BLT). Oh man, I'm going to have dreams about that sandwich though. All in all, I would definitely recommend! Try the BLT!

A deli sandwich was just what I was looking for during lunch on a Saturday. It was pretty crowded inside and jumped in line with a menu in hand. I was able to place an order within about ten minutes and shimmied my way into the cramped corner to wait for the sandwich with the other folks. Unfortunately I had to wait a good half hour for my cuban sandwich to be made, and had I known this, I would have stepped outside and enjoyed the fresh air while I waited instead of standing by the cashier. The sandwich was underwhelming for the price. Not enough meat and not enough aioli. The cured meats sitting in the display looked fantastic but the sandwich was very ordinary. By all rights this place should be awesome with the friendly staff and the small-town feel of the shop, but the long wait and the average sandwich was a huge letdown.

    (2)
  • Doreen E.

I get it. I get why there's a line here for the food. I get why the relatively high prices for the sandwiches. The roast beef is outstanding, that little bite from the horseradish at the end of every chew. The porchetta sandwich was also a winner, as was the out-of-this world potato salad (not to be missed). The one thing that confuses me and which I deem unfair is the fact that apparently, if you order sandwiches to go, you do not get chips. I don't see why you shouldn't get the same amount of food as those who stay, especially since there's very little room to sit (especially if you're a large party). The service was attentive, but changes to the sandwich (at least as perceived by me) were not welcome.

Took the ferry over for lunch . We had the sardine tartine sandwich. Usually, when I think of sardines, they are oily and fishy. This sandwich is anything but. The rye was delicious, the white bean spread was generous and the arugula had that fresh bitey taste. The sardine was huge and not fishy at all. Eating it was a messy treat, so gather up a bunch of napkins before you devour! My son had the bbq pork sandwich and said it was amazing!

  • Samantha G.

I still have dreams of Hitchcock's Espanola sandwich. Everything about this sandwich is perfection: perfectly cooked egg omlet, idiazabal cheese, caramelized onions, roasted garlic, potato chips (yes you read that right!), and smoked paprika aioli. All the ingredients just went so well together. I love the light crunch from the potato and the smoked paprika aioli was life changing. I want to slather that in all my sandwiches now! Aside from that, the rest of their menu looks tasty. I have also sampled their Cuban sandwich, which was delicious, especially the pickles (which are made in-house). I don't know how often they sell cookies but if it's available, get a chocolate chip sea salt cookie (so good!). Hitchcock Deli is a great place for a casual lunch on the island, especially on a nice sunny day since there's seating outside the deli.

  • Eryck Q.

Wow! what a great surprise! a small deli but the food is great! Pastrami sandwhich is now in my top 2 besides my fav joint in LA. The pastrami is smoked and so flavorful. Friendly service as well!

The best corned beef sandwich I have ever had, totally melts in your mouth and I would go for the extra meet, which actually shouldn't be extra it should be the standard size as all delis in Jewish communities serve a 2 inch high packed with pastrami or corned beef. Once again, the quality of the meat was incredible and I know good meat after managing one of the best steak houses in the country.

We contemplated all the choices nearby and were so very happy we chose this place. My husband's reaction to his corned beef sandwich was "not just yea, but oh hell yea" wonderful.

Needed some food before we went to the Bloedel Reserve. We got the BLT, egg salad, turkey, and club sandwiches. Everyone thought they were delish! They were a little pricier than I would've liked but they were definitely still good. The bacon is amazing.

If you are taking a short day trip to Bainbridge Island and want some good non-pub grub type of food--which is where everyone seemingly funnels into--then you would want to put this place at the top of your list. We ordered a delicious, flavorful, and memorable porchetta sandwich, though it was not particularly cheap. Great for eating at the deli counter which faces the street, their outdoor seating area, or taking to-go while you explore the beautiful green island.

  • William M.

Great corned beef sandwich. The place is cramped and uncomfortable, but the staff seem friendly. Easy walk from ferry and they make their own smoked meats. Not as good as the 'rooster' sandwich and coffee shop around the corner.

Came in after a bike ride because I was craving a charcuterie plate to take to the waterfront to enjoy this gorgeous spring day. FYI - a charcuterie plate is not an option here (not sure if you're as surprised as I am about that). You can order your own charcuterie and make your own plate. Interesting concept I didn't try...too lazy at that moment. Asked for recommendations at the counter and was suggested the pastrami, which sounded tasty. Maybe because I got it to go...but...underwhelmed. Bread was both dry and soggy from the sauces at the same time. The meat was tasty but insufficient (would go for piled high next time). Slaw was just okay...though I'm fairly certain I got some wilted pieces of something green. Gave 3 stars because I liked the spot, good location and atmosphere. People were friendly. And despite all its shortcomings...the sandwich was decent (unfortunately I was expecting Langer's from LA or Katz from NY level pastrami). What can I say? Maybe I'm a bit of a snob. :P. Though I also want to say it's cheaper at these locations too. But if you've had pastrami at either of these places, I would say, there's almost no comparison. If you haven't, I recommend checking these places out on your next trips...if anything...for the experience and of course great food. :)

I had the opportunity to dine here as part of a large work function. We had about 60 people and rented the entire Restaraunt. Now typically large parties are hit or miss but Hitchcock's definitely knocked it out of the park. We enjoyed a Chef's sampling fixed menu meal. Highlights included perfectly cooked salmon with raw fermented kraut, fresh raw oysters, a grilled octopus salad, and ribeye with a blue cheese sauce. The service was also excellent especially for ablative party

We stopped at Hitchcock Deli for some brunch. It was pretty crowded, but I made my way out with a cappucino, an española sandwich and a chocolate dream bar. I loved the española sandwich. It's pretty much an omelet sandwich with caramel onions and crunchy potato chips on the inside. The bread was multigrain, but still light. It's an ideal breakfast sandwich. I also got some cream of cauliflower soup, which was thick, very hot and had excellent flavor. Even the peanut butter and jelly sandwich that I got for my toddler had great flavor. My wife liked her turkey sandwich, although she admits that she still doesn't like figs. That's okay though; I liked them just as well. Overall, great coffee, farm fresh food, excellent baked goods. I couldn't ask for much more.

Phenomenal sandwiches. Perfect potato salad. Everything we've tried is so full of flavor. Simple food, done extremely well.

Hitchcock Deli is a small, remarkably friendly place on Bainbridge Island. I love their focus on locally-sourced ingredients, including meats from Washington state. Who knew that Washington was a pork producer? Among other things, Hitchcock makes their own bacon, which was delicious by the way. I ordered a BLT and was not disappointed. My wife had a turkey sandwich that was equally tasty. The prices are high, but the quality of the food matches, so I wasn't too concerned. One word of caution-- This is not a "light lunch" kind of place. Despite being a deli, the portions are large and the food is rich. I usually can power through two entrees at a restaurant no problem (my own and the 75% of my wife's- it's OK, I only take what she doesn't want). In this case though, I found it a challenge to finish both of our meals, even though they were both terrific. So, in short--great ingredients, high prices, rich food for a deli...and they make their own bacon!

Neat local place for people watching. You can sit at the window and watch many people and dogs stroll by. The Espanola was a yummy Spanish inspired sandwich (I wouldn't say completely authentic, though). Eggs, grilled onions, potato chips, and thousand island esque sauce between fresh bread. Friendly staff.

Wow! Amazing sandwich. Very cool décor and feel. Espresso magnificent. My 12 year old son had the OG Roast Beef, and I had the Chi-town Roast Beef. Absolutely delicious. My son said that it was the best sandwich he has ever eaten, and I agree that it was definitely up there with the best. What a great find in Bainbridge.

Had a great sandwich here today roast beef on potato bread with cheese and some horseradish sauce . not a super big sandwich but very adequate. Very small space, looks like only 10 chairs or so. I had my order to go so no problem for me but it was an hour before lunch rush. very friendly staff, good service. I stopped a woman walking down the street and she recommended this place I'm glad I went I will stop by again try Hitchcock

Great for lunch! I have been here multiple times for lunch and a snack. Staff is really friendly. The good: the sandwich selection is great. I've had almost every one of the sandwiches and they are each amazing. Would strongly suggest the egg BLT. The place smells amazing. Soups tend to be good. The bad: the bread they use for a few of the sandwiches is too soft and falls apart easily. The bread for the egg BLT is way too soft, and it can get messy, which is really unfortunate. I wish there were more options instead of the side of chips for the sandwich. Not a lot of seating (which is fine). It gets rather crowded during lunch.

Don't go expecting any easy table or breathing room, but I'm saying it here: The Cuban sandwich here puts the Paseo Cuban sandwich to shame and makes it look like a SPAMwich. The pastrami sammy here is better than any I've had in NYC. (though the style is different...this is original pastrami form) Try something different and be pleased by their Espanola.

Thought it would be great by the previous reviews. Ok at best. Overpriced for taste, quantity and quality. Not a NY deli by 3000 miles.

Delicious sandwiches! Carolina BBQ is so good; tangy but not sweet, very tender and the bread was soft. BLT also very good, especially with the smoked bacon. Great place to grab a bite to eat while walking around town. Intimate seating but it's casual and you might strike up a conversation with a friendly local like we did.

What an amazing little find! We came across this place after coming off our sailing trip hungry because our stove ran out of fuel! After seeing other breakfast places like Steamliner ( aloof waitresses) and Nola were 30 mins long of a wait, my hubby just went next to Nola and started talking to this place! The people there were really nice! They reassured us their food come warm unless it's a blt! I was hesitant since it's a deli.... Omg, after a long, cold, hungry sailing trip in the rain, a hot sandwich melting in your mouth was divine! I got the Porchetta sandwich and my hubby got the Pastami! I loved mine and he loved his! A previous reviewer was right about the sauerkraut, it's not NYC. But it's not meant to be! It's totally West Coast! And I loooove it! I wanted to steal his kraut, but I was too busy eating my sandwich. The quiche was a good eggy goodness! Good sturdy, thick crust! Latte?? That girl knew her thang! Pulling a sweet ristretto like a Pro on that Bosco Espresso Machine! All satisfied! Service is relaxed. People are nice. They have outdoor seating. Highly recommended!

I cannot leave this place without feeling like a carnivore of the most ferocious kind. The shop smells of bacon, curing, cooking, and smoking meat. The pastrami is perfectly salted and just the right amount of chew, and when sandwiched with housemade sauerkraut on fresh bread it makes an ethereal lunch. They also serve delicious espresso from Cafe Vita and baked goods; don't miss the cookies on top of the delicase!

Had an awesome lunch here last week! We are the: *Cuban: awesome! Best sandwich there with tender, roast pork. *Roast beef: excellent version- get it! *Pastrami: their top seller but our least favorite...still good but not quite up to par with the options @ Market House Meats or the Jewish delis out east. Next time you need a lunch (or casual dinner) in Bainbridge, give this place a shot! You'll leave full and happy :)

Can't remember a worse meal, but it could have been because both the deli and the town were packed with tourists (July 3). We both ordered the pastrami sandwich, which turned out to be almost entirely fat, with a few threads of meat. The rye bread, raw kraut, and single piece of cheese were okay, but the fat made the entire sandwich a nauseating experience. Unfortunately, because there was no seating available, we'd taken our food to go --- and ended up eating about two blocks away. If we'd been able to eat in the deli, I would have asked whether by "pastrami" they really meant beef fat. The menu said you could "swap chips for potato salad" for an extra $2, so I opted for that. The sandwiches originally arrived with no chips and no potato salad, but when we asked about it, they said they don't include the chips unless the customer specifically requests them! So we requested chips for the other sandwich. They arrived in a brown paper bag and just tasted like Lay's. The potato salad tasted like straight mustard and was more condiment than potato. As it was almost inedible, I really regretted paying extra for it. The sandwich makers looked exhausted, so maybe they didn't notice (or care) what they were putting in the sandwiches. It may be that the pastrami is better quality when the deli is not busy, but we won't be back to find out.

I ordered the pastrami piled high and the hubby ordered Chicago sandwich, both with the chips. Wish I didn't order the pastrami. I love pastrami. I grew up in the NYC / Boston area, and I've eaten great pastrami. Yes, it's suppose to be from a fattier cut, but not the amount of fat this pastrami had. It was like two thirds fat and stringy tissue. Slaw was okay, but there was so much slathering of I don't know what -- 1,000 island or something? -- or was it slaw juice, that the bread, which was okay (but somebody around here, please, PLEASE offer pumpernickel), became soo soggy soo quick that the sandwich fell apart such that all the fat and stringy stuff was outted for all to see. The sandwich just became inedible. I usually wolf a pastrami sandwich down. I ate half of a half and gave up. My husband, who freely admits he likes fat, ate the other half the next day for lunch. He felt bad and gave me some of his Chicago sandwich, which was way better. It was less fatty and the bun held up to all the stuff solid and liquid inside it. We tried the soup special -- a spicy bean soup or something like that, which was good, but we had to wait a rather long time after that for the sandwiches. Rather expensive, and so disappointed; have no plans to go back.

What a disappointment. We had high hopes for a couple of great sandwiches, but were sadly very let down. The Cuban was so greasy and fatty, it actually made me feel ill. The pork really needs to be trimmed. Can't really speak to much else since I couldn't really eat the sandwich. My boyfriend got the club. The turkey and bacon were decent, but the ham didn't have any flavor. The bread was too flimsy to hold up to all the meat and such, so it just fell apart. The potato salad was pretty good, and the location is cute. Overall, you can tell that they are using quality ingredients, but in our experience, it was poorly executed.

Ordered from the butcher section. I ordered quarter pound of pastrami. The place was busy, as usual, but I got my meat when I was ready to pay.. Left excited with their smoked pastrami. Almost home, I checked the package. It was fat with a little meat. More like fatty bacon than pastrami. Took it back for a refund and will check my order prior to leaving. Beware during busy times.

Went there and was underwhelmed. Definitely didn't live up to the hype. We had a pastrami "piled high," the hitchcock salad, and a slice of the carrot cake. The pastrami sandwich came on good bread, and the spread was fine. The pickled cabbage had a slightly odd flavor, but I think that's just their mix of spices -- it was interesting, though very sparse. The letdown, sadly enough, was the pastrami: too much fat and too little salt. Thickly cut, which was nice, but definitely not what I'd consider "piled on." The salad was the star of the show. A strong bleu cheese, pickled onions, very nice olives, good greens, and a tasty cider dressing. It was surprisingly small, though - looked like a side-salad rather than a lunch portion. The carrot cake started well. Nice cream cheese icing, not slathered on so heavily that you couldn't enjoy the cake. The cake was noticeably sweet (that is to say, slightly too sweet), and a little flour-dense. Nice golden raisins and shredded carrots. The pine nuts were a smart addition - but turned out to be slightly rancid. The people behind the counter were helpful and very pleasant.

It took the deli person a while to notice me, not very friendly, but she did make my picky order right. Coffee barista was very nice and helpful. Had the El Greco, and Loved it! Would have liked a beer but they only had a limited selection of cans. All around fantastic food, okay service.

What a gem! A small, but VERY well crafted assortment of specialty meats that make THE most delicious sandwiches. Tried the pastrami and cuban, and of course a sea salt chocolate chip cookie. After being mostly paleo for the last couple years, I am picky about what my cheat meals look like-- the sandwiches at Hitchcock are worth every gluten-y bite. The meat is divine-- succulent, just fatty enough to give optimal flavor, and paired with very enhancing ingredients that highlight the quality of the meat. The french press and latte were also superb.

Really remarkable, ecstatic sandwiches. The braunschweiger was exquisitely matched with rye bread and spreads. A perfect sandwich.

Get the homemade pickles. Trust me on this -- you'll turn right back around and order seconds. I could have had the entire jar and packed one in for the ferry ride back. And, did I mention their mustard? What kind of a magic shop is this?! Worth the stop for lunch.

Awesome sandwiches!! I had the turkey sandwich and added bacon... So delicious. They have really great quality meat and a fun environment. Besides the service taking a little long (it was pretty busy) this is a great place to stop by and grab lunch! I will definitely go again.

I stopped by here during my first visit to Bainbridge Island and it was a good choice. My boyfriend had the pastrami on rye and I had the BLT on a potato roll, with egg salad and pickle added for an extra $1. Egg salad and pickles on a BLT sounded a little strange to me but I figured that I would give it a try. I'm happy to say it was tasty and I'm glad I added the extras! The pickles were crunchy and a little sweet, and with just a little bit of egg salad as a spread kicked up a regular BLT a notch. Also, all of it on the delicious roll made it even more special. The boyfriend enjoy his sandwich too. The taste was a little different than a traditional pastrami sandwich, but in a good way. We'll definitely go back when we come back.

BLT FTW. Not fast but you wanted slow (and good) food, right? Seriously, best BLT in the world and POS and barista peeps full of character and great conversation. Go here and eat outside at the community table. You will make a friend and hear some cool stories. This is Bainbridge charm all the way.

Awesome Club sandwich! Best I've ever had! Loved the vibe of the place and service was great! I did go on a Wed afternoon so don't know about service at busier times but I thought it was fabulous! Going back to the island tomorrow for work and most definitely will be returning. The mocha was great too!

WOW! What a gem. It was such a pleasant surprise to find this place in the little town of Bainbridge. Hitchcock crafts some of the best sandwiches I've had in the PNW. I recommend the BLT plus egg salad.

Really good sandwiches. I had the Martino and my boyfriend had the pastrami, which he declared was the best of his life. The Martino was good, but messy to eat. Would be 5 stars if the sandwiches were a little larger and/or less expensive -- each sandwich has 1/4 lb of meat. Out of the 4 people in our group, 2 who got the standard-size sandwiches were not full by the end of their meal. Although my sandwich was quite big, some other sandwiches were on different bread and about half that size. However, you can order more meat, if you wanted it. They were out of soup before 1:00, which was disappointing. I would go back.

Stopped by to get a sandwich for my son before boarding the ferry. Unfortunately the staff can't follow directions and slathered the sandwich with mayonnaise which he is allergic to. When I called to give them some feedback they acted like it was my fault. There are better places to give your business to.

Finally. A place that really cares about coffee! This unusual deli has a great menu of charcuterie and other delights, but I go there for one thing: coffee done right. Our favorite Barista, Kales, sets the bar very high and the others that work at Hitchcock, clear it every time. Most often we order cappuccinos and every time, the shot is timed right, the foam is vevety and the end result is smooth and sweet. The coffee they use is Cafe Vita, from a great Seattle roaster. Bainbridge Island has some great coffee...Blackbird, Bainbridge Bakers.... but for now Hitchcock is number one.

This place made me so sad and my husband so cranky. They absolutely need to straighten out their line/ordering/paying system. People had no idea where to stand, there was lots of cutting in lines....basically, you get in one scrunched up line to order sandwiches. The sandwich makers are pretty fast and you get the sandwich quickly. Then, you are stuck standing in another scrunched line where people pay or order other non-sandwich items. The big problem is that not only was there only one person doing the paying line, but he wasn't there for a good 15-20 minutes and then was super slow. Our sandwiches were all soggy and not very good by the time we sat down with them. And we didn't even order anything else, so it's not like we delayed ourselves. The flavors in my steak sandwich were good, but my husband's was a bit ruined by the wait. I would absolutely not return here. They only get 2 stars because the sandwich makers are good.

Great homemade sandwich and treats shop. Walk up and order the goodness. Had a terrific Italian sausage sandwich with a ragu that was out of this world. My wife had an egg salad sandwich highlighted by their homemade pickles. To me, it's the only place for lunch on Bainbridge Island. Oh and get the root beer.

Great little hole in the wall, New York style deli. The sandwiches are excellent, the staff is friendly and have a kind of New York attitude with a smile. They are all pretty interesting looking with tattoos and Greenwich Village clothes and hair cuts. This is a good thing, as I like the look and it fits in with the New York style deli atmosphere. Seating is the weak point here. It is almost impossible to find a place to sit and the line to order and pay puts customers hovering over your table of which there are only a couple inside and one outside. You must be very specific and watch them make your meal if you have any requests which are not part of the menu description. For example I love the Hot Pastrami sandwich with sauerkraut. But the sauerkraut when served on the sandwich makes the bread soggy and it falls apart so I ask them to serve it on the side warm. I have ordered this several times and it always seems to come differently if I don't watch them. Kraut on the side cold (wrong), kraut on the bread soggy, despite instructions not to (wrong), cold bread with luke warm pastrami, (wrong). Etc. When I go back to try and get it fixed, they are overwhelmed and make you wait for the correction until all the other people in your party are done with their meal. Very "New York". Despite this criticism, they do make a great sandwich with fresh ingredients and can be worth the hassle if you don't mind baby sitting your order. Wish it were not so crowded though.

The Bad: Do not order the Cuban B! It is served on soggy sliced bread & the pile of fatty greasy meats made my husband & I nauseous. I'm from Tampa, FL where Cuban sandwiches are legendary, & this one missed the mark. I appreciate the hearty portion, it was just not to our personal taste. The turkey melt was OVERWHELMED by bitter, overly sweet & chunky fig preserves & bitter arugula. The Good: Although the turkey was sparse, in order to save our rumbling tummies we pulled it off the sandwich & when eaten alone it was quite tasty. The ratio of ingredients were off, although you can tell the quality & flavor of their products are very good. Based on that quality, I would go back, but I will definitely order different sandwiches.

We just left Hitchcock and to put it in my husbands words, I must say the pastrami sandwich is "knee-buckling"!! The light, flavorful pastrami accompanied by the Russian dressing and sauerkraut is thee best I've eaten. And for a girl who loves her pastrami's that says a lot! U must make this little trip to BI just to try it... Aside from this my husband also enjoyed their Club sandwich packed w turkey, ham and bacon. Yum!!!

Good simple sandwiches with quality ingredients like Painted Hills roast beef, Free Range Turkey and Macrina Breads. Hitchcock Deli is a great stop in downtown Bainbridge. Pick up some made to order sandwiches or charcuterie and have them wrapped in wax paper (with a stylized Hitchcock sticker to hold it all together) and head off for an impromptu picnic on the beach, weather permitting (we like Faye Bainbridge State Park.) At Hitchcock, you'll be treated to a good sandwich, great ingredients and excellent customer service. (We were given samples of the meats from sandwiches we didn't order, to keep in mind for next time. With little niceties like that, there will definitely be a next time!) We had their turkey sandwich and their sandwich with goose liver pate. The turkey was our favorite. While we love pate, and the goose liver was rich and smooth, the sandwich itself was pretty plain. I noticed from past reviews that they were light on kid friendly options. They've added a PB&J sandwich and can make grilled cheese. Kudos to them for responsiveness to feedback. It would, however, be great to have a few more options to choose from. (With their great meats, they could make up a sampling of cheese and turkey, and some dried fruit, and maybe a few hazelnuts, like we had at a great sandwich shop in Oregon recently, and the kiddos would be thrilled.) While we did have to make two stops to find another kid-friendly lunch item, it was worth it to sample the quality sandwiches we picked up from Hitchcock.

Hitchcock's used to make the best chocolate chip cookie I'd ever tasted in my 42 years of life. But today is a sad day!! The recipe has changed, and I am devastated. Different chocolate, far less salt on top, and a bland texture have destroyed my all-time favorite chocolate cookie experience. Will miss it forever.

Food 4 Service 2. To the hipster wannabe in the librarian glasses, please don't speak to us like idiots when one of us orders The Martino--"um, we DON'T carry that anymore." How would we know that when it's prominently displayed on the giant wall menu? And then, with us being the only people in there who ordered food, it took 25 minutes. Might be good when you're the only game in town, but this place wouldn't make it elsewhere where there are other good choices.

My favorite cup of coffee on the island right now..the flavor was very earthy and rich, as opposed to the light flavors you tend to find at most places. Haven't tried the deli yet, so this rating is just for the cafe.

Nice little deli with excellent sandwiches and really good coffee. BF had the pastrami on rye, which he inhaled. I had pulled pork which was pretty good. We also split a thing of potato salad that was flavorful, not too mayo-y. I also had a cinnamon latte, with their in-house made hazelnut date milk. Really good. Especially after the disappointment of Pegasus Coffee. Great spot for a good sandwich on Bainbridge Island.

3 Based on the sandwich solely, I would definitely give this place a solid four - but due to the really disappointing size of the sandwich, I really feel like its deserving of a one-star reduction. When you walk in, the environment is really nice - sort of felt like the Hamptons, on a nice street with a nice breeze, nice sunny weather, a nice sit-outside area - with the delicious smell of their meats adding on to it. There is absolutely no question that all of their meats are top-notch; the pastrami my dad got was excellent, the turkey my sister got good, and the bacon I got phenomenal. The elements of the sandwich really come together well- the BLT I ordered tasted really good. Taste aside, I was really disappointed to see the size of my sandwich an extremely small square cut into diagonals. And, they don't give chips for take out orders, which was kind of ridiculous. The pastries here, which I also didn't try, are pretty ridiculously expensive. All in all, I WOULD recommend this place for a great sandwich - but just don't expect the best bang for your buck. Food: 22 | Service: 8 | Decor: 20

Yum is all I have to say! This place is simply doing what they love, and creating a great product. I like their confidence and unpretentious approach to food, wine and coffee. The 'Pastrami' is my favorite with its smoky flavor and richness, and my husband loves the 'Roast Beef'. You can't go wrong here. Make sure you ask for chips if you're going for take out. There's not much seating, and that's okay because I don't expect it when I go into a deli. When I do find a seat I consider myself lucky. When the weather is nice they have a park bench outside you can share with other diners. It's a premium people-watching spot. I perused their wine selection and was impressed. The wines were selected because they are good, and at a very reasonable price. Since they're open kind of late for a sandwich shop, if you're feeling like you want a quick and simple meal, run in and grab dinner and a bottle of tasty wine -- goes well with in-home movie night marathons!!

Well, food still good. Had the BLT, I loved the sandwich. However, I did feel it was a little small for the price and it should be quicker than 35 minutes plus for a take out sandwich! The bacon is still awesome though. I will try calling in my order next time to see if that helps with the speediness.

Interesting selection of high-end sandwiches (i.e. no Wonder Bread PBJ) that seemed reasonably priced for the area at around $8-$11 each. On our initial drive-by, we sampled the roast beef courtesy of the friendly people who work here. The RB was moist and peppery, and suggested a return later upon the onset of hunger was in order. On the afternoon visit, ordered a BLT, with the addition of egg salad (as recommended by the friendly employee behind the counter). Awesome. She also recommended the Lentil and sausage soup special; my wife called it the best Lentil soup she has ever had (and this from a woman who grew up on a Lentil-only food commune). They also serve a full range of espresso drinks, that we did not try having just had one. Seating is limited and informal, unlike their sister restaurant next door. Only drawback is that there was no safe kid sandwich option...yet. Maybe that high-end PBJ is in order Finally, on our first visit during the afternoon, they were cranking Zeppelin 1. If nothing else, this is criteria that assures a five-star rating.

Their bacon is incredible. You can buy it by the pound, and they cut it to your desired thickness. They have a lunch menu of sandwiches, and other charcuterie items, but the bacon is why I come back.

Lovely! I went today and tried the meatball sandwich, the roast beef potato, the pastrami on rie, and the salad with danish blue. Everything was delicious. The meats were awesome and the bread was very fresh. The meat ball sandwich was good but the sliced meat sandwiches were incredible. The service was fast and very friendly. I had side salad and the serving was generous, it could be a light meal, if blue cheese counts as protein. The french press coffee was yummy and the biscotti selection was very interesting. We had one pistachio and one hazelnut. Very nice. The restrooms are next door, at Hitchcock. There is only seating for about 7 people inside so be prepared to take your food to the one table outside (weather permitting) or to take your food to go. The 5th star goes for having a side sandwich shop in addition to the fancy restaurant. I wish other high end restaurants would do the same. Kudos for that!

I love this tiny spot. Hitchcock's main restaurant is next door, and isn't open early during weekdays, so this is a perfect spot for the grab-and-go sandwich and a French press coffee. It's a wee little place; you'll have to forage for one of the-maybe three?-tables, or a stool at the window chow-bar. Here, they showcase their house-cured meats and pates. Some's cured in-house and others are well-sourced locally. They're really low-key and friendly here; while debating which sandwich to order, one dude overheard me telling my friend that I pretty rarely eat bread anymore, and he said, "How 'bout I make this into a big, bad salad for you?" Yes, indeed--that's service, my friends! I am always really impressed when staff actively seeks ways to delight you. I used to get a kick out of that in my ancient waitressing days, and I think it's the way to stay happy at your job, actually. Anyway, a little gesture that speaks very highly for Hitchcock's. I ended up with a meatloaf sandwich served as a salad. It was really great: a simple preparation where the meat took center stage; not a lot of condiments, just well-cooked meat with subtle herbs and seasonings. Portions were generous, and my companion liked his (pastrami sandwich) a lot. There's a communal picnic table in front for overflow if the weather's good; otherwise, take it on the run, bay-bay. Pro tip: one of only two places I've found on the island selling raw whole milk. I think they even have local island eggs. And the price for these is consistent with Walt's and other places I've found the same products.
